I’m Jenna and I began my journey to a vegan lifestyle after watching Earthlings in 2010. Before I pressed play on that documentary I had no interest in ‘giving up’ meat, and yet that day I resolved to never eat it again. After 18 months of vegetarianism I became vegan in 2012.
Before I saw Earthlings I was completely ignorant to the horrors of factory farming, dairy and eggs. Like most people I grew up with this this image of a farm being a lovely green field where cows, pigs and chickens enjoy the sunlight until their time comes. I now know that sadly the vast majority of animals don’t feel the sun on their backs or breathe fresh air until the day they are loaded onto trucks bound for slaughter.
I hate to say it, but before that moment I was more than ignorant of the facts, I also tormented my vegetarian friends, asking questions like ‘would you like a steak for dinner?’ – a memory that annoys me to no end! I mention this because I think this has effected how I now talk to people about veganism. I feel that I know how to get through to people, having been there myself not so long ago.
My passion is educating others on veganism in a non-aggressive way, through showing my love for a cruelty free life. The Healthy Herbivore is my place to do this through reviews, musings, recipes and product reviews. I truly believe that promoting what you love, rather than bashing what you hate, does have a really positive effect on people.
