The never ending quest for the best vegan bacon!
When I first started on the path to a plant-based diet, my (still omni) partner sent me an article about how bacon is a gateway to meat for vegetarians. As someone who does like the taste of meat, but doesn’t eat it for ethical reasons, I’m always keen to try alternatives to bacon.
So on a trip to The Cruelty Free Shop with my partner he spotted this Tofurky Smoky Maple Bacon Marinated Tempeh and was drawn to it. While I normally go for wholefoods over more processed foods I decided to treat us to schnitzel and bacon toasted sandwiches for dinner, using Fry’s Golden Crumbed Schnitzels.
To be honest I’m not the biggest fan of tempeh (yet?), and when I sampled a strip after cooking them didn’t think I’d like the product. But once it was on a sandwich, pressed between with the combination of the schnitzel, wholemeal toast, lettuce and tomato it was absolutely delicious! While the price is quite high ($12 for 400 grams), Tofurky is an imported product and uses organic, non-GMO soy. As a bonus, tempeh is high in protein and low in fat so is a great ingredient to create a complete meal.
